John Kinch has been in the restaurant business for 32 years, operating everything from fast-casual to fine dining. More than year ago, he decided to venture out on his own and make plans to open his own restaurant.
He opened The Community Grill in 2017 on Main Street. Kinch said he wanted the restaurant to be a part of the community and the neighborhood in West Frisco.
After speaking with his neighbors and friends, he realized that the neighborhood taverns they had grown up with were gone.
“Neighborhood taverns were places you went with your kids, had a date night and maybe bumped into people you worked with or your neighbors,” Kinch said. “Those places have kind of disappeared, and honestly that’s where The Community Grill was born.”
The restaurant’s tagline is “where neighbors gather,” a good description of what the restaurant represents, Kinch said.
The menu also reflects that comfort feel; Kinch describes it as comfort food with a culinary flair.
One of the most popular menu items is the Neighborhood Burger, a 6-ounce burger with cheese, spinach, tomatoes and bacon with the option to add a fried egg and avocado.
Kinch’s restaurant also offers a play on the grilled cheese sandwich called the Grilled 3 Cheese Prosciutto Sandwich. Prosciutto is smothered in white American, sharp cheddar and gouda cheese layered with tomato.
The decor inside the restaurant has a rustic feel, bringing about a comfortable atmosphere, Kinch said. The design emphasizes nature-inspired textures. In fact, a lot of the wall decor is from a torn-down barn that belonged to Kinch’s friend in Iowa.
One wall includes pictures of the teams of nearby high schools Reedy High School and Wakeland High School.
“There was a lot of family and community love in putting together this restaurant,” Kinch said.
Kinch said expansion and growth is a possibility, but his main focus for the time being is establishing The Community Grill in the neighborhood.
“We’re a comfortable restaurant with culinary fanatics making good food,” Kinch said.
